Legal Regulations and NCAP

The EU-General-Safety-Regulation (GSR), Chinese commercial vehicle homologation or Brazilian tax-incentives for crash avoidance: With proven maturity and effectiveness of Active-Safety-Features, governments worldwide are contributing to road safety by making features like Emergency-Brake-Assist mandatory for every new vehicle. The resulting increasing technical complexity of the vehicle architecture and required development effort to comply with those advanced legislation requirements will turn out as a challenge – especially for small volume OEMs and new players in the automotive industry.

A similar development could already be observed several years ago in the EuroNCAP evaluation scheme. In the early 2010s, EuroNCAP has shifted attention to crash avoidance and Active-Safety features. In 2020, reaching a 4-5 star rating, which is still the main development target for most OEMs, is only possible with a multitude of ADAS sensors and Active Safety features.

Having a closer look, this does not stop at ADAS sensors. AVAS (Acoustic Vehicle Alerting Systems), an acoustical warning system to alert vulnerable road users about approaching vehicles, is already mandatory for EVs in many regions. Cyber Security is closely related to all vehicle safety aspects and thus also part of many upcoming mandatory legislations.

Acoustic Vehicle Alerting System (AVAS)

Acoustic Vehicle Alerting System (AVAS) is an additional element to electrical vehicles that artificially generates a sound which will be generated through loudspeakers or actuators based on vibration of structural elements of the vehicle proportional to vehicles parameters, for example velocity, gas pedal position and gear.
