Brake Competence for BMW M

Continental Engineering Services provides development and integration support in brake technology for high performance vehicles.

BMW M vehicles are designed to meet the highest demands in terms of agility, dynamics, and power. Unlike the standard model, this means, among other things: a more powerful engine, a sportier feel, firmer damping control, an overall stiffer chassis, this includes a more dynamic braking system. The demands on the brake performance of a BMW M are high: the vehicles tend to be driven in a sportier manner and to be slowed down from higher speeds. A great deal of development work is required to ensure that driving functions such as traction control, electronic stability control or the anti-lock braking system provide optimum support for the driver in situations where the vehicle is at its limits and that no intervention takes place too early or too late.

Since 2016, we at Continental Engineering Services have been able to take the application task of the BMW M vehicles and take care of the special braking performance. In concrete terms, this means selecting the appropriate braking system and adapting the associated software to the vehicle characteristics. In the latest M vehicles we placed our vacuumless and by-wire brake system the MKC1. In addition, various extra features for the sports mode have been developed at Continental Engineering Services, for example to enable faster brake response and thus a different braking feel. Another example is the drift feature, which allows the driver to maintain a drift angle for as long as possible.

Our expertise in brake technology for high-performance vehicles also benefits other well-known sports car and special vehicle manufacturers, who are served by our colleagues in Europe, America and Asia.
