Surround View Systems
Blind spots – a danger to the vehicle and its surroundings.
Blind spots in the driver’s field of vision are partly formed by the vehicle itself or by add-on parts. These areas can cause serious problems for Vulnerable Road Users or damage to the vehicle. The mirrors and single-view cameras help to see where things are, but that’s not always enough to enable the driver to perform the manoeuvrings safely.
The Surround View System uses four fish-eye cameras with a horizontal field of view of 195° that deliver perfect images in Full High Definition. The cameras are positioned in the front, rear and on the exterior mirrors and provide input to the ECU which creates a real-time 360° view of the vehicle in a single image. It also monitors the area around the vehicle and recognizes static or dynamic objects and warns the driver in case of possible collision.
The displayed views can be combined up to the customer’s preference. For example, into two areas: the view from above, also known as “Bird’s Eye View”, plus an individual camera view to show the front, rear or side environment.
A special view is called the “Transparent Hood” which displays in real time what is underneath the vehicle. This is particularly helpful in tight road situations or on rough terrain. The “Transparent Trailer” feature uses an extra camera mounted on the rear of a trailer and the one on the rear of the vehicle, which is part of the surround view system, and merges the pictures together seamlessly. The result is a panoramic view behind the vehicle that renders the trailer to appear as virtually invisible.
There are several commercial options available, from visualization and detection functions as software as a product, up to complete systems consisting of cameras and control devices.
The Surround View System can be easily combined with other safety solutions, such as the “Camera Belt System”.
