CES AVAS Solutions Ready for the Future
As the electric vehicle market in India expands rapidly, ensuring pedestrian safety is becoming a critical concern. At Continental Engineering Services (CES), we offer a ready-to-integrate Acoustic Vehicle Alerting System (AVAS) tailored to meet the needs of OEMs looking to future-proof their electric and hybrid platforms.
Designed and validated to meet global standards, CES’s AVAS is already in series production with leading automotive brands. Now, we are bringing this field-proven technology to India — giving vehicle manufacturers a powerful solution to address both safety requirements and regulatory demands with confidence.
Understanding the Indian Market – Including Two-Wheelers
While CES offers high-end AVAS solutions, we deeply understand the unique dynamics of the Indian market and are committed to developing scalable, affordable technologies. In India, 2-wheelers play a uniquely vital role: they’re not just modes of transport but a key enabler of livelihood for millions. Ownership rates far exceed those in most global markets, and the decision-making around safety features often varies significantly among riders.
With fewer regulatory restrictions than in regions like Europe, and a high incidence of motorcycle-related accidents, the importance of acoustic safety systems is especially pressing. CES sees this not just as a compliance issue, but as a social opportunity: AVAS can contribute meaningfully to India’s road safety efforts — across all vehicle segments.
AVAS Built for the Future of Electric Mobility
Electric vehicles operate quietly, especially at low speeds — a feature that enhances comfort but introduces safety risks. CES’s AVAS solution, already deployed in global EV platforms, is optimized for integration into Indian electric vehicles — including passenger cars, commercial vehicles, and 2-wheelers.
This actuator-based approach, rooted in our Ac2ated Sound expertise, provides:
- Lightweight, space-saving design by eliminating traditional speaker hardware
- Natural, 3D spatial sound that mimics the perception of real engine or alert noises
- Acoustic tuning flexibility that aligns with OEM brand identity and user experience
- Direct correlation with vehicle dynamics (e.g., speed, acceleration, gear shift)
By embedding sound directly into the vehicle architecture, CES delivers AVAS systems that are not only regulation-ready, but acoustically advanced and design-friendly.

Full-System Expertise for Seamless Integration
Backed by Continental’s global R&D leadership and deep knowledge in Noise, Vibration, and Harshness (NVH), CES supports OEMs at every step of AVAS integration. Our services include:
- AIS-173 and UN R138 compliant AVAS
- End-to-end services: software, hardware, tuning, validation, and homologation
- Custom sound development with psychoacoustic insights
- Platforms suited for both M (passenger) and N (commercial) category vehicles
Whether you’re developing a passenger car, light commercial vehicle, or electric bus, CES’s AVAS can be tailored to your vehicle architecture, acoustics, and market positioning.
Regulatory Readiness: AIS-173 in Focus
India has introduced AIS-173, a new standard requiring electrified M and N category vehicles to be equipped with AVAS. The regulation, aligned with UN Regulation No. 138, is expected to come into force by 2027, giving OEMs a limited window to integrate and validate compliant solutions.
“The central government has approved a policy on installing AVAS in e-vehicles to address the concern that they could pose a safety concern for pedestrians as they operate silently,” said Reji Mathai, Director of ARAI.
CES’s AVAS is already aligned with these global and national standards, enabling fast, low-risk implementation for Indian OEMs.
“At Continental Engineering Services, we see AVAS not just as a compliance solution, but as an opportunity for OEMs to create a unique brand soundscape that enhances safety and elevates the driving experience. With our proven global technology and local engineering support, we’re fully equipped to help Indian OEMs meet AIS-173 with confidence and creativity,”
