Challenges for altitude estimation for UAVs

  • Barometer: measures MSL instead of AGL
  • GPS: less accurate for vertical data, reliant on signal strength
  • IMU: drift over time and need reference sensorics
  • LiDAR / Ultrasonic: struggles in bad weather conditions, vegetation or reflective surfaces
